When it comes to baseball, you need to have the shortest memory possible.
One of my favorite questions to ask my players is, “what’s the only pitch that matters in baseball?”
I’ll get all kinds of answers ranging from strikes to fastballs… lots of different answers.
The answer is “the next pitch”. The next pitch is all that matters in baseball.
Whether you’re a pitcher, batter or fielder — you could have struck out 10 times in a row, made three errors in the field or walked a few batters, whatever it may be, but none of that matters. All that matters is the next pitch.
As a coach, we need to help our players understand that the only thing that matters is the next pitch by reminding them of this next pitch mentality.
